Embroidery raises the roof again this Sunday!

I couldn't resist sharing these summery pictures from Camille's Rooftop Embroidery class. Aren't they beautiful? The print that everybody's stitching on is Camille's design- a template that shows all the stitches covered in class. Pretty cool, right?

I have to say, the roof is one of my favorite things about Lillstreet these days. It's the best place to watch the sunset, and the best ever place to have an embroidery class. The new sessions start this Sunday- come over and take in the view with us.

PS- if you're a low commitment kind of embroiderer- there is still room in the weekend Ribbon Embroidery class. (Saturday 2-6)

It's a small space, but it's packed full of beautiful detailed treasures, just like her work. At Lillstreet, Camille teaches embroidery, screen-printing and assorted workshops (scroll down to find out about this weekend's line-up). In addition to being a popular teacher around our department, Camille was also the Textile departments very first artist in resident. Enjoy the tour.....

Hey all you printers- the long awaited Rongalit workshop with Ursula McCarty is back. August 8th Ursula will be here with her steamer to teach this exciting process. If you've every wanted to learn more about discharging color from fabric (including silk) this is a great once every other year opportunity. Monday Artist Studio Sneak Peeks ***Akemi Nakano Cohn***

This week's Sneek Peek takes us to the studio of Akemi Nakano Cohn, who teaches dyeing , felting and Katazome in our department. We've included a handful of pictures with captions below- to see more, check out Akemi's website
Katazome ; putting the rice paste through cut-out paper stencil on fabric.

Katazome: brushing alum on already pasted with rice paste. Madder, Black oak, and walnuts are on fabric.
The fabric is suspended with bamboo stretchers and secured on both sides.

Traditional Japanese way of making bamboo fabric stretchers. It is easy to brush and it makes fabric dry faster.

Akemi is offering a one day Nejiri Shibori workshop this weekend. There is still space in this popular workshop which I highly recommend. Akemi teaches all over the country and the world and we are so lucky to have her at Lillstreet!

Wanted- Books!

A few of you have left great book suggestions. As we get closer to posting the list of Lillstreet favorites this weekend, please don't forget to contribute. Our book list will have four different categories- Printing/Dyeing, Knit/Crochet/Felt, Embroidery, and Sewing.
In the meanwhile, let me recommend this book as one with great information on lots of those categories. It's the go to book for embroidery stitches, and it's got great easy to understand directions for knitting and crochet.

Streeterville Artisans Market-Call for Entries

Barbara Goldberg and Mary Baim, two Lillstreet students, are helping to spread the word about the Streeterville Artisans Market. They are particularly looking for textile artists- scarves, pillows, t-shirts, etc.
The market takes place right before Christmas at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Applications are due August 1st. So many of you are making such cool stuff- and screen-printing especially lends itself to making multiples. I encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity! Details below, e-mail artisans@soarchicago.org for more information.

Monday Artist Studio Sneak Peeks ***Andrea Loest***

Starting today, we're rolling out a new Monday morning blog feature- artist studio sneak peeks. Inspired by design*sponge, I thought it would be fun to give our blog readers and students little photo tours of our teaching artists.
For this first week we're showing Andrea Loest. Andrea is a grad student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Fiber and Material Studies department. Her first time sewing, garment design, and weekend sewing workshops are a huge hit around Lillstreet. Come check out the collection of re-usable grocery bags that the first time sewing students make every term. Here's a view from Andrea's studio at SAIC.....

If you've been wanting to take a sewing class but haven't had a lot of time to commit, you're in luck! Andrea is offering a Sun Hat Workshop this Saturday from 2-6. It's a one time, make it all in an afternoon kind of workshop. Hope to see you there! Stay tuned next Monday for a tour of Akemi Nakano Cohn's studio.

Reading List

If you're like me, summertime is about reading and catching up on all the things that I made note of during the year. The "on hold" section of my Chicago Public Library account is a long list at this time of year. To make the most of summer, I'm starting to compile a Textile Department reading list, and I need your help.

Please leave your favorite textile related books in the comments section of this post. I'll wait a week or so for everyone to submit and then I'll post the selections.

What are your favorite reference books for printing, dyeing, felting, embroidery, knitting, sewing, etc? Let us know......Thanks!
