Rebecca Ringquist in Connective Thread (in Brooklyn!)

Rebecca Ringquist, who teaches embroidery and screen-printing in our department at Lillstreet, will be featured in a group show which opens next week at Sweet Lorraine Gallery in Brooklyn.    The show, called Connective Thread, features 16 artists from around the country and was curated by Joetta Maue, whose blog, Little Yellow Bird, we are linked to on the right column in the "favorite blog" section.   The information for the exhibition is all available on its very own blog.  An opening reception is planned for next Saturday, January 9th from 7-10pm in Red Hook.  I hope you'll stop by if you happen to be in New York.

Christmas at the White House on HGTV!

We've gone on and on about the White House, but I promise there's just this one more thing.  It was  featured on HGTV last night, and I was delinquent in telling everyone that it was going to be on........however!  It will re-air a few times.   I hope you can catch it- the tree looks just beautiful, and there are some great shots of Rachel at the top of a ladder decorating in the State Dining Room, and Rebecca watching the First Lady deliver a speech about Toys for Tots in the Grand Foyer.

I hope you all have a great Holiday.  Take care, and we'll see you in 2010!

Hola!!! Hola!!!

Floor chair for Sarah. 2009

I am Johana Moscoso “Miss Fix-It” the new textile resident @ Lillstreet. I produce physical and emotional prostheses. During nine years of creating wearable art, I have provided emotional services that transcend functionality and discipline in my practice. For example, I have developed a floor chair for a disabled child that allows her to interact with other children and her family over the floor, a hip shaker for amateur dancers and a blinder-hood for a person who works in noisy environments.

Blinder-hood for a person who works in noisy environments.2009

You can see my work in my blog johart.blogspot.com or my website www.johanamoscoso.com (which is getting updated). Soon you can see my work around my semiprivate studio in Lillstreet in the textile department room in the third floor.

Sally Went to Washington!

Sally Armbruster, who took my Printing with Thickened Dyes class last fall, was hired last December by the Social Secretary (Desiree Rogers) and moved to Washington to work at the White House!

I was honored to be contacted by Sally to organize a ribbon project here at Lillstreet, and so grateful when so many of you came out to help.  Rachel and I got to spend some time with her when we were at the White House last week, and it was so much fun to hear some of her stories and to spend time where she works everyday.

Today's front page story in the Chicago Tribune is a feature about Sally!  Get the whole story (and lots more pictures) here.  Or, pick up a copy at the corner store.  Hooray for you, Sally!  I'm so happy to know you.

Tune in Sunday Night to See Lillstreet on ABC!

This Sunday night, the Christmas at the White House special will air on ABC at 9pm, hosted by Oprah. Tune in to see the ribbons that volunteers made at the Lillstreet Textiles ribbon workshop. The ribbons are featured prominently on the official Blue Room Christmas tree, where they were used to attach recycled ornaments made by community groups across the country. Rachel Walker and Rebecca Ringquist were there to help decorate, so look out for us as Michelle Obama introduces the tree on Sunday night! We'll post pictures here on Monday after the special airs on national TV. To see a few extra shots now, check out the Chicago Tribune's photographs. Merry Christmas!

Check out Oprah's commercial on You Tube.  The White House Shines!  It really is as beautiful as they say.....

Easy Repeats!

Hey Everyone, Easy Repeats a 3 week course is off to a great start. I wanted to share with you some of the work the students did this week. I cannot believe this is their first time setting up registration and creating repeating patterns. Check it out:

Frances Krueger-Jackson was inspired by irons, creating this awesome half-drop repeat.

'Tis the Season, Maggie Weiroch created this sweet repeat.

Rudolf the red nosed reindeer would love this pattern inspired by antlers. Kirsten Killean explored half-drops, straight repeats and mirroring in these two patterns.
