OPEN STUDIO UPDATE- TEXTILE DEPT RENOVATIONS

I have got some exciting news!  The textile department studios will be receiving some upgrades- like an added table in the print room and custom tables for the sewing room.  A wall in the print room will also be taken down to make the flow of the room less crowded.  To the right is a preliminary sketch of the plans for the sewing room.

Renovations start bright and early Monday Jan 3rd at 7am!

Open studio will be canceled on Monday, and will be available throughout the rest of the week, with renovations running alongside.

I can't wait for all of the winter session students to see the new spaces!  Who am I kidding?  I can't wait to see it all come together!  Check back for updates!!!

Knitting class starts soon! Can't wait to be back with the knitters - thought I would show some of the items that people began in the last class. People with a variety of experience joined knitting class and everyone came out learning some new tricks! In the last post I think I mentioned that a few newbies - first time knitters! - started socks! We also had one student who hadn't knitted in a a long time get back on the "horse" and she is knitting an awesome skirt - lots of people found patterns from knitty.com a great website that gives free patterns and suggests the level the pattern is most appropriate for. I have also added an image of the felted bunny from our felting workshop back in the fall - just, well because its so cute! This session knitting is on Sunday mid-day which is a great time to have tea knit and chat.

Sketchbooks for Designers

While getting ready for this winter's Garment Construction class, I've been thinking about my design process and how I go about inspiration gathering. You might think of the sketchbook as a tool for painters or people who can draw, but its a fantastic way to fuel creativity and organize your ideas. The first step is to collect huge amounts of photographs. If you see something that strikes you, cut it out (or print it out- I gather lots of pictures while aimlessly surfing the internet, but I tend to forget about them if I don't have a hard copy).
The next step is to make some collages (in the fashion business, these are referred to as mood boards, because that sounds fancier). This part of the process helps you discover unexpected things about all those photos you collected. Which ones seem to go together? Is there a set of colors that looks really good next to this other picture? Maybe the flowing line of a drawing and the flowing line of a photograph suggest the same things to you.
Even if you don't have a particular project in mind, keep collecting and curating your collection. When you're feeling in need of inspiration, or just need help deciding what colors to use in your screen print, flip through your sketchbook.
The last step is to make something amazing (for more help with this last step, check out our winter courses!) I hope everyone's enjoying the holidays, and I look forward to seeing you in Garment Construction & First-Time Sewing.

Easy Messenger Bag Class

Hi everyone! Nora here; hoping you all had a lovely and relaxing holiday weekend!

Last week marked the end of my first Easy Messenger Bag class, with great success! Even though the class was only three weeks long, the students made some beautiful bags:

Mitzi opted for an upholstery weight flap with a satin exterior and matching fabric handle.

Inside, she has a large pocket on the front and a smaller pocket on the bag. So handy!

Jill got creative with her exterior pockets: each one sized for specific objects and closed with velcro. Her bag is made of corduroy and cotton with a web strap. Beautiful and functional!

I am thinking about proposing an advanced messenger bag class. It would cover basic construction as well as zippers, zip pockets, more velcro, buckles and adjustable straps. Would you guys be interested in that? If you, let me know in the comments or give the Lill St Front Desk a call. Bags from that class might look a little something like this:

(You know you want to make one...)

In the meantime: don't forget to sign up for my Sew Your Own Hooded Sweatshirt class! We'll be learning how to design, pattern and sew your very own hoodie. 'Tis the season for warm layers! See you all there!

MY NEW BEST FRIEND

I just wanted to share with you my new best friend.  This arrived on my door-step yesterday.  It's a floor-standing embroidery hoop that allows you to sew with both hands, and is adjustable for different sitting heights so you can sit upright.  I am working on a study for a larger GRASS ANTS embroidery, based off of the paintings below.  Some of the blades of grass will be silk-ribbon embroidery.

I think this is going to be a wonderful winter break!  I hope everyone enjoys the holiday snow.  Take care and warm wishes,

-Camille

Our first session of knitting was great fun we knit socks, sweaters and scarves – as well we all knitted a mini sweaters to get some practice with various stitches. In our second session more socks, and scarves and other goodies. Two students who are soon to be first time mums, made baby leg warmers, socks and hats!

In our needle-felting workshop everyone was excited about the projects! It was a great day and we all felt the time fly by!

Check out these aprons made by first-time sewing students- perfect for holiday entertaining or gifting! We're finishing up messenger bags next week. Its always exciting to see how quickly everyone learns- some of my students have even been making their own copies of the apron pattern so they can make some extra for gifts.

BRAND NEW class offered in the New Year!

Digital Imagery for Print on Fabric (10 weeks)

Lillstreet now has a new digital lab and has generously offered to let the textiles department use it. Students have often asked me questions about Photoshop and Illustrator when creating their images, and since we've never had a digital lab before, my answers have been quite limited. Now a whole new world will open up for students by combining digital imagery with screenprinting. Another benefit, you can actually see what your pattern will look like before you start printing it. This will allow for better planning; and as a result, more complex pattern making.

Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Price: LAC Members $330.00/Non-Members $340.00
Instructor: Allison Rose

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Create dynamic imagery, patterns, and graphic images in preparation for screenprinting on fabric. Learn how to digitally generate imagery with the programs, Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will work in the digital lab and print studios. Fee for students working with dye. Pre-requisite: basic computer knowledge and First Time/Beginning Screenprint on Fabric. Enrolled students have access to facilities during weekly open studio hours.

Time: 6:30-9:30pm
When: Wednesday, January 12, 2011 to Wednesday, March 16, 2011
