just some shows i want to see

i have to admit it; i have not been to a gallery or museum in a long time. for now, i will blame it on school :) anyways, i have heard of a few good shows around town and thought i would mention them here.

hyperlinks: architecture and design at the art institute of chicago
i have only seen one image from this show. it was of a really crazy piece of uber space age furniture...i hope there is more like it in the exhibition.

chez mignon: a house of pretty things at elastic arts foundation (friday april 01 from 7:00pm to 11:30pm)
sometimes i go to thrift stores and vintage shows for pattern inspiration. a friend of mine sells vintage clothes from the 30s to the 8os and she will be vending at this gallery. there will also be a fashion show of vintage pieces and local fashion designers plus a photo exhibit and jazz band.

the horse at the field museum
i just like horses.

comment and list any cool shows you want to see!

Digital Imagery for Print on Fabric Class

Last week we wrapped up our Digital Imagery for Print on Fabric Class. This class teaches you how to use Illustrator and Photoshop to create successful repeats and graphic imagery ready for screen printing. I believe most people assume that if artwork is created digitally, it lacks a hand and doesn't seem to breath; but as you can see from all of the pictures of students work from the class below, this contradicts this assumption.

Digital Imagery for Print on Fabric will be offered again in the summer term.

One hundred pieces of unique handmade art made by more than sixty artists will be auctioned over a three day period. Handmade for Japan will be donating 100% of the proceeds through eBay Giving Works, which is partnered with MissionFish, to Global Giving's Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. Handmade For Japan aims to raise over $25,000 to help the victims of this disaster recover.

Global Giving

Why Global Giving?
Handmade for Japan will donate all of its net proceeds to Global Giving because they support grass root organizations active in stricken areas who may otherwise be overlooked by traditional foundations. We were quickly convinced that Global Giving’s use of online networking is a highly versatile, flexible, and rapid way to organize international donation efforts. Moreover, this approach allows donors to be kept updated on the use of funds. Global Giving's dynamic team played an important role in supporting the start-up efforts of Handmade for Japan. As testimony to the reputation of Global Giving, its Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund is endorsed by ABC News, the New York Times, Huffington Post, and Time Magazine. Global Giving's updates on use of funds can be monitored at:

Garment Design

Check out this selection of work from the first ever garment and fashion design class at Lillstreet!

There's a lot of ambitious projects that are still in muslin stage, and I'm looking forward to sharing those when they are finished. Designing, patterning, fitting, and sewing a whole dress is a big undertaking- but its exciting, and worth it to have a garment that fits perfectly! The fashion industry (and the pattern-making industry) drape all their garments on dress forms that fit an average body-type, which results in clothing that fits everyone ok, but no-one perfectly. To get a garment that really fits, you have to start from scratch. The best part is that once you have that basic skirt and bodice pattern done, you can make anything!

If you stop by the sewing studio, take a look at our bookshelf for some new pattern drafting books and think about taking up pattern making.

Lillstreet Noted "Fiber-Friendly" Craft School

Check out Fiberarts Magazine's listing of Fiber-Friendly Craft schools: Lillstreet's on the list!

New Works

Since arriving at Lillstreet in January, I've been working on several projects ranging from gift quilts to large orders of pieced bags for retail. I have also been working on some color tests as research for upcoming larger scale work. Although I still have a few tests left to do (involving: 1. wax, 2. shellac, 3. screen-printing, 4. rubber), there are five new works hanging in the textiles classroom. They are titled Aggregate Index, followed by the color.

stumped by color sometimes?

sometimes, right before i print a multicolor design, i realize i have no idea what colors to use. if you find yourself in the same situation, take a look at the site color scheme designer.

it's simple to use and lets you tinker with a bunch of variables and you see the results immediately. the top row offers complements, triad, tetrads, and what not. i think it's mostly for web design but i think it's an awesome tool for lots of disciplines.

One class away from our Beginning Knitting class coming to a close. Its been a great session, we have had the pleasure of homemade cookies, good laughs and excellent projects. One student, has returned to take the class again, to work on a more complicated project with support, the rest of our group are all new knitters. Even if you know how to knit you may need help with a more complicated pattern - please feel free to sign up for the next session and I can help you to read the pattern, make yarn choices etc..

I had to post the amazing fashion show we had today! Each student made a sweater for Barbie - a great way to learn a variety of stitches, how to block and sew together a garment all in five weeks! One of many projects completed in the beginning knitting class. So check out the variety of looks we created for Barbie who is renamed as Lill!

Repeat and Repeat Again!

Here we are at the end of the session already and the folks in the Repeats and Patterns class have been really prolific not only in body of work, in talent too! It seems like we just get started and the term is over, so to keep the ball rolling, we've offered you an opportunity to hone your skills by signing up for the Advanced Patterns and Repeats class. Check out the Lillstreet website to get yourself in the class! In the meantime, enjoy the eye candy below . . .

See you in the Spring!
